First days and second tries

The previous post was pictures taken after sunset. This time, I took pictures in the late afternoon on the shaded side of a building. These turned out better, and a lot closer to the style I am working toward.

 Today was R's first day of school! She had been asking me daily for several weeks if it was time to go to school yet, and her excitement washes away any hesitation I have about whether she will do well. The day went famously, she had a wonderful time, and is excited to go back again tomorrow.

First Experiments

Here are the first pictures, trying my camera out in low light. I tried some without the flash, but none of them turned out as I wanted. Next experiment is to try tweaking the shutter speed to get clearer low-light pictures without using the flash.

These first two were taken in the same time frame. The first one is indoors using the flash, the second is outdoor with no flash.


These next pictures were taken outdoors in low light using the action setting and the flash. I can't say I am a big fan of using the flash, mostly because I have pale subjects (my kids), and it washes out the picture too easily if you are in close proximity.
